There is no proposal to increase the retirement age of Supreme Court or high court judges, said the government on Friday.

There have been demands to raise the retirement ages of judges, particularly in HCs, to address the issue of vacancy.

“There is no proposal for increase in retirement age of judges of the Supreme Court from 65 to 68 years,” Law Minister D V Sadananda Gowda informed the Rajya Sabha.

He said a constitutional amendment bill to increase the retirement age of HC judges was introduced in the Lok Sabha on August 25, 2010, but it lapsed with the dissolution of the 15th Lok Sabha.
