Allegedly upset over having to quit her job to be with her future husband, a 29-year-old woman jumped to her death from a mall a day before her wedding.
Shivani was scheduled to marry a Singapore-based man, Ajay, at 7 pm on Sunday. She jumped to her death from the fourth floor of TDI Mall in west Delhi’s Rajouri Garden at about 11.30 pm on Saturday.
Her engagement with Ajay had taken place in Vikaspuri area earlier in the day.
She was at the mall to be a part of the mehendi rasam in a restaurant located on the fourth floor.
The groom had come down to Delhi with his family for the marriage recently. It was an arranged marriage and Shivani’s family told police she was not against the idea of marrying Ajay.
“But the victim’s parents told us today that she did not want to leave Delhi to settle down in Singapore with her husband,” a senior police officer told Deccan Herald.
Shivani was also allegedly compelled to quit her job for the same purpose.
“She was working with a private firm in Gurgaon. She was made to quit her job about four-five days ago. Her family says she was upset about having to resign,” said the officer.
Her family did not think Shivani would resort to suicide. “They were thinking she was upset that she would have to leave her parents,” the officer added.
As the family was celebrating the pre-marriage ceremony at the mall, Shivani suddenly leapt on to the road below from the balcony on the fourth floor. Police were immediately informed and the victim rushed to a hospital. Police suspect she died on the spot.
No suicide note was recovered from her and she spoke to no one about her plans to kill herself, said police.
A case at Rajouri Garden police station has been registered and police are investigating if any other factor led to her suicide.
