Entertainment for a green cause

Divine Social Welfare Society, a non-government organisation organised an evening of Sufi music with the famed Nizami Brothers at Sri Satya Sai Auditorium enlivened a nippy Sunday while drawing attention to an issue that is top of the mind for most of us – environment.

The fund-raising event, organised by the NGO, Divine Social Welfare Society, was part of their campaign ‘Green Hands: Save Earth-Save Future,’ and the proceeds will be utilised for taking the campaign forward.

The Nizami Brothers commenced the evening with Maula ke kaul..., which according to Sufiana tradition is important to start any event with. These Sufi legends mesmerised all with their powerful voices and magic of qawwali. They presented some soulful poetry and received a huge applause from the audience.

The lines Mere maula ka jis pe karam ho jiye woh satyam shivam sundaram ho jaye... and Ha se Hindu ban gaye, ma se Muslim bane aur jab ha aur ma mile toh hum ban gaye... touched the people drawing a huge applause from them.

Both Ghulam Sabir Nizami and Ghulam Waris Nizami have been firmly entrenched into the tradition of sufi qawwali singing. For the past 750 years their ancestors have been associated with Dargah of Hazrat Nizammudin Auliya. The two brothers have given performances across the world and were initiated into the rich qawwali tradition when they were just eight years old.

Sabir Nizami says, “Qaw-wali Allah se ishq hai… The real motto of qawwali is to join people’s hearts and make agreements. The last reason is to enjoy it as a form of entertainment. This qawwali does with its sher, ansoo, andaaz and ghazals.”

Yash Sharma, general secretary says, “Green Hands-Save Earth-Save Future realises the harmful after effects of globalisation and urbanisation, which is taking place in our country and we want people to be aware of such issues. Divine creates
a platform where people from various backgrounds can come and discuss issues of environment.”

“In the last 2-3 decades, we have witnessed drastic changes in the environmental scenario which is affecting us in many ways, such as global warming, earthquakes, cyclones, floods, landslides, depletion of natural resources etc. So, we are very much concerned about our next generation.

The big question today is, “Are we going to leave anything behind for Gen-next?” he said, adding, “People should enjoy the evening, but not forget the motive – providing ‘green environment’ to our future generations. People should make themselves available for tree plantations in their cities.”

Divine is working since 2003 to create platforms for raising awareness in the country on various issues of social concern.
