Three men, who had allegedly robbed late-night workers on the pretext of giving them a lift in their car, have been arrested. The HAL police said they had recovered gold jewellery, mobile phones and laptops, all valued at Rs 10 lakh, from the suspects.

Police have identified the suspects as Bhavi Chandra, from Sarjapura, Kishore Rao and Punith Kumar, both residents of Mahadevapura. All the three are said to be aged around 30. While Chandra and Kumar own a couple of cars and had opened a travel agency, Rao worked as driver for the enterprise.

The suspects would work in the travel agency during the day whereas at night they would take their car to Marathahalli, Whitefield, Kundalahalli gate and the surrounding areas, looking to pick up late-night working wanting to return home.

The suspects’ modus operandi was to slow down their car as soon they noticed a lonely person waiting for a cab. They would offer to give him a ride. Once the person got in the vehicle, they would rob him. They would also warn him against approaching the police. Thereafter, they would kick the person out at a deserted place and speed away.

A senior police officer said, “Around a week ago, one of the victims approached us and lodged a complaint stating that he was mugged by three unidentified men. We realised that similar incidents were reported in the jurisdiction of Whitefield, Mahadevapura and HAL police stations. We gathered information and found some clues about the miscreants, and arrested them later.”

The officer said that two cases each registered at the HAL and Mahadevapura police stations had been solved with the arrests. “But we investigating whether the three men are involved in may more crimes,” the officer added.
