Inside the glass house

David Abraham and Rakesh Thakore worked as independent designers until they realised that their ideas were quite similar.

That’s when they decided to start the label ‘Abraham & Thakore’ and today, they are one of the most sought-after designers. They were in the City recently.

The two have been working together for the last 20 years and have never refrained from trying out something different in each collection of theirs. They are popular for giving the sari a whole new character and expression by replacing blouses with shirts.  They have even added belts to saris. “Why not,” they ask. “The sari was never considered cool to drape but now, we have a lot of people who love the idea of teaming a shirt with a sari. Our collection is never predictable and we always try to weave something unique.  For instance, our sari is always four-and-a-half metres long which makes it easy to wear,” they say. Indian weaves and colours excite David and Rakesh. Since most of their designs are steeped in traditional cuts and designs, they use embroidery rather gracefully in their work.

“It’s the traditional essence of  India that we play around with. We also strive to strike
a balance between embroidery and tradition. We think it’s important that India has its exclusivity,” explains David.

Rakesh says that they design according to the personality of a person and their garments are specific to a particular season. “Each person’s taste is different and so the cuts and designs have to vary as well,” he avers.
Every collection has a story behind it, explains David. Rakesh pitches in saying that only commitment and dedication have brought them this far and that innovation is the key to sustenance and helps them stay on top.
“Our next collection is based on ‘dhotis’. It’s the traditional fabric of India but we have turned it around and converted it into something that is not only practical but easy to wear as well,” explains David.
David and Rakesh don’t differ a lot when it comes to putting their ideas together. “Our thoughts and ideas blend. That’s precisely why we are working together,” they sign off.
