Fog disrupts 5 flights, 9 train services in Delhi

Five flights were cancelled and 70 delayed due to dense fog in Delhi on Wednesday, much to the inconvenience of hundreds of flyers.

The city witnessed severe cold conditions, with both the maximum and minimum temperatures recorded below normal. While the maximum temperature was 15.9 degrees Celsius, six notches below normal, the minimum settled at 5 degrees, three notches below normal.

Visibility varied between 50 and 75 metres from 7:30 am to 10 am at Palam airport, increasing to 200 metres at around 11 am.

Four flights from Delhi and another arriving were cancelled due to poor visibility. The total number of flights delayed was 70. However, no flight was diverted. “Due to low visibility, 99 flights were operated with the help of the instrument landing system,” said an airport authority official.

Rail services were also hit in the national capital, with nine trains being cancelled. Sixty-seven trains bound for Delhi were running late and another 38 were rescheduled, according to a bulletin released by the Northern Railways on Wednesday evening.
