New Delhi railway station’s CCTV footage helped police to nab a 21-year-old woman who had allegedly stolen diamond jewellery worth Rs 5 lakh from a Rajdhani Express passenger.

It turned out that the accused would carry her eight-month-old daughter with her during the thefts to draw people’s sympathy in case she was caught, police said on Monday.

Victim Sushma Munda had boarded the Mumbai-bound Rajdhani Express from New Delhi on December 24.

Much after the train left the platform, she realised that her small purse containing diamond and gold jewellery was stolen from her bag.

She immediately called her brother Gaurav Kumar who filed a complaint with police. CCTV footage of the railway platform was scrutinised.

“A woman was found following the victim in a suspicious manner. Our sources among the coolies, vendors and shopkeepers were contacted to help identify the woman,” said police in a release.

The woman, Anju, was found living in rented accommodation in north Delhi’s Subzi Mandi area. She was nabbed and the stolen booty recovered from her home, said police.

“It was revealed that Anju, in the company of her mother, would steal from railway passengers. Her mother has been jailed a few times for such thefts,” said police.
