Hurray, it's a holiday!

The countdown has already begun — in anticipation of the New Year’s Eve, people have already packed their bags and booked their hotels, and are ready to leave (if not already gone).

They know that this is one of those few times in a year when they won’t have to keep looking at their phones, with a worried frown on their faces!

While there are some who have lavish plans to kick off the new year in places like Dubai and Thailand, others want to keep it simple by taking the weekend off to one of the many tourist attractions in and around Karnataka. Just around Bengaluru, there are almost 50 weekend getaways (apart from Nandi Hills) that one must see.

Those interested in treks can visit Savandurga, Skandagiri, Ramanagara, Anthargange, Kunti Betta, Madhugiri among other places. Hogenakal and Shivanasamudra Falls are a must-visit for those looking to have a leisurely time. Manchinbelle and Bheemeshwari have activities like rafting, trekking and more.

Padmini, who is spending New Year’s in Gokarna with her friends, says, “We make it a point to travel every few months. We save money for two or three months and then get away.

For two people, Rs 20,000 is usually enough for a two to three day holiday. But this time, it has been a little more expensive since it’s during New Year’s.” Her friend Siri says that five years ago, for a ten-day-long holiday in Gokarna, it cost just Rs 5,000, but now the prices have gone up. “Between October to February, the rates are higher than usual,” she adds.

Siri says she was adamant on going on this holiday. “It’s hard for us to get leave and I had to struggle to get these ten days off,” she says. Why were they so particular about going to Gokarna? “There is so much to do there. You can trek, swim (in any of the beaches) and after a point, vehicles aren’t allowed so you get to explore everything on your own,” says Padmini.

Gladys Menezes and her husband Sudhanshu Shekhar leave the City every weekend. “Getting away from city life rejuvenates your mind and body. Every week or fortnight, I go to my estate (near Chikkamagaluru), otherwise, we go to some places nearby,” she says.
