A businessman was killed with an accelerator wire in central Delhi’s Daryaganj on early Tuesday.

While one person was held for the murder, his alleged accomplice is yet to be nabbed, police said.

The accused has claimed that he killed 65-year-old Naresh Bansal for charging an “unjustified” rate of interest on some money owed to him and then abusing him for not returning the money on time.

Police refused to divulge the suspect’s identity claiming it would hamper efforts to nab the other accused.

Bansal lived with his family in Guru Nanak Nagar area of east Delhi’s Laxmi Nagar. While he primarily dealt in property and had an office in Chandni Chowk, he also indulged in other ventures such as lending money on interest.

Police received a call from a patrolling unit at 1.19 am about a body lying in Daryaganj’s Shanti Van area.

The victim’s neck bore severe injuries which were inflicted with an accelerator wire of a motorcycle.

“These wires are very strong and can inflict very sharp injuries. The accused knew that carrying this wire would arouse no one’s suspicion and it can be easily concealed,” a police officer told Deccan Herald.

Bansal’s son told police that on Monday evening, he had taken his father to a hospital in Daryaganj for eye treatment.

His father had stayed back in Daryaganj market and told him that two persons would meet him soon to return some money they owed him.

Bansal’s family had launched a search for him and then lodged a missing complaint when he did not return home late in the night.

Soon, they received a call about his death. Police said the victim was killed in another part of Daryaganj and his body dumped in that isolated spot in Shanti Van.

“The assailants wanted to seek revenge for being repeatedly abused on not returning the money they had borrowed from Bansal. They say they found the rate of interest charged by Bansal unjustified,” the officer said, adding it had created problems for them to return the money on time.
