Fear gripped the residents of Teerthkunde and adjoining villages in Khanapur taluk after a leopard attacked a calf on Sunday.

According to the Forest Department officials, the leopard attacked the calf when a herd of cattle was grazing near Kavalapurwada just outside the village. It left the year-old calf injured and escaped into the forest.

According to Bama Navale Gundre, a resident of Teerthkunde, the leopard suddenly attacked the calf, following which there was panic among the herd. However, the cattle, which retreated, later returned and chased the leopard away.

Forest officials, who rushed to the spot, confirmed that it was a leopard attack because tigers never let their prey escape.

Incidents of attacks by wild animals are on the rise in the villages of Khanapur taluk. After the recent gunning down of a tiger, another tiger has been reportedly sighted by the villagers.
