The Girinagar police have arrested two pharmacy students on the charge of threatening a 20-year-old girl and her sister of uploading latter’s photographs and videos on the Internet, if the siblings failed to pay up Rs 10 lakh.

The arrested have been identified as Adarsh, 23, a native of Shivamogga, and Rishwanth, 22, of Mysuru. Both were studying pharmacy at a college in Mysuru.

Police said that Adarsh and the victim were neighbours in Shivamogga. Recently, the victim shifted to the City for studies. She was staying at a paying guest accommodation in Girinagar. The victim’s elder sister stays in the City.

Adarsh managed to obtain the mobile number of the victim’s sister and sent her messages saying he had obscene photographs and videos of the victim and would upload them on the Internet if he was not paid Rs 10 lakh.

The frightened sisters managed to arrange Rs 50,000 and asked Adarsh to collect the money. But Adarsh refused and insisted on Rs 10 lakh. The sisters later approached the Girinagar police, who laid a trap to nab the suspect.

Accordingly, the victim’s sister sent an SMS to Adarsh asking him to come near the satellite bus stand on Mysuru Road to collect the money.

The police made a bundle of waste papers (which looked like cash bundle) and asked the victim’s sister to give it to Adarsh. But Adarsh didn’t turn up and instead sent his friend Rishwanth to collect the money.

“After collecting the packet Rishwanth was walking back to meet Adarsh, who was waiting close by. The police followed them and arrested the duo,” the officer said.

It is learnt that the two did not have any obscene material of the victim in their possession. The victim and Adarsh were neighbours in Shivamogga and he thought she would be an easy prey, the police said.
