K'taka has third highest CAT achievers

Karnataka has the third highest number of candidates who have secured scores of 99 percentile and above in Common Admission Test 2014.

A total of 1,710 candidates secured a score of 99 percentile and above. Out of this as many as 163 candidates who appeared for the test from the State have managed to secure 99 percentile and above.  

Maharashtra tops the list with 275 candidates scoring 99 percentile and above, followed by Delhi with 226 such candidates. Karnataka has 163, Uttar Pradesh 162 and West Bengal has 136 candidates with scores of 99 percentile and above.

The CAT 2013 had similar results with Maharashtra being at the top. As many as 1,401 candidates from Maharashtra had scored between 95 and 99.9 percentile and 1,406 students had scored marks between 90 and 94.9 percentile.

Delhi came next, with 1,213 candidates scoring between 95 and 99.9 percentile and 1,203 between 90 and 94.9 percentile. Karnataka stood third, with 1,115 candidates scoring between 95 and 99.9 percentile and 920 candidates securing marks between 90 and 94.5 percentile.

Educational background

Like previous years, candidates with engineering background dominate the list of high performers in CAT 2014. As many as 1,525 candidates from engineering and technology backgrounds have secured scores of above 99 percentile while 41 such candidates come from commerce and economics background. Another 32 are from pure science background, 25 from biotechnology and 10 came have studied management courses. Six students have studied pharmacology and pharmacy, five from medicine and dental science and two from law. There was one candidate each from the field of architecture, arts/ humanities, fashion, communication, food technology and agricultural engineering. Commenting on the performance of candidates from the Bengaluru, Srinivas Belvi, Academic Head of coaching institute TIME, said that a good number of toppers were from the State. “However, Bengaluru as a city definitely has got more potential and can do much better.” 

Further he opined that most of these high achievers from the city were from come from outside Karnataka. “To give an example, one of our own top performers who secured a score of 99.9 percentile studied with us and coached with us here although he took the exam in his own city at Delhi. There are many instances of aspirants traveling to different centers to take the test,” he said. As many as 1.96 lakh students had registered for CAT 2014 out of which 1.68 lakh appeared for the test held in November last year.
