Tiger protection foundation constituted

Last Updated 06 January 2010, 19:22 IST

The cabinet decided to set-up the Tiger Protection Foundation in Ranthambhor and Sariska to protect the declining tiger population in Rajasthan. The decision was taken up under Wild Life Protection Act and Tiger Protection Authority guidelines, an official communication here said.

Each tiger reserve will have the protection foundation for effective tiger protection and bio-diversity planning. The Foundation is also likely to boost ecological tourism and help run a clear and transparent forum. The Foundation will bring together all stake holders–state, forest department, NGOs, wild life experts and private sector, Gehlot said.

Having hit headlines for almost extinct tiger population in Sariska in 2004, efforts are on to restore lost glory to the famous tiger reserve. Four years after all the tigers in Sariska were wiped out by poachers, a young male tiger was airlifted from Ranthanbore to Sariska in June 2008. The reserve now has two tigers and one tigress after relocation.
