When Leverock's catch went viral

In the 2007 World Cup, Bermuda were one of the six qualifiers. In a pool that also included India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh no one gave them a chance. They were expected to sink without a trace. But one man’s efforts ensured that Bermuda left the shores of West Indies leaving behind some memorable moments. Dwayne Leverock was that man.

A prison van driver and a hefty man of more than 280 pounds, Leverock hardly resembled a cricketer. But in the match against India, he took a brilliant catch to dismiss Robin Uthappa off pacer Malachi Jones. Standing at slips, Leverock hurled his massive frame to the right and pouched a remarkable one-handed catch to dismiss the Indian opener. Even more funny scenes followed that catch.

Leverock ran away to a corner of the Queen’s Park Oval with his team-mates in hot pursuit. There wouldn’t have been a happier day in the lives of photographers who were present at the venue. However, India piled up 413 runs, thanks to a Virender Sehwag’s hundred, and fifties from Yuvraj Singh, Sourav Ganguly and Sachin Tendulkar.

India then dismissed Bermuda for 156 to record a 257-run win. Leverock had one more moment in that match when he dismissed Yuvraj with his left-arm spin. Later he dismissed Sri Lanka’s Kumar Sangakkara too to return home a mini super star.
