Carefully placed into a crevice of Satya Niketan, right opposite Sri Venkateswara College is a tiny eatery that goes by the name of Big Yellow Door.

However, one would be unwise to let the size of the establishment be a precursor for their quality. What this petite scullery may lack in size and space, it sure makes up for with some of the most delectable delights you could find anywhere in the city.

With clientele ranging from office goers to families to hordes of college students that throng the vicinities of South Campus, Big Yellow Door, or BYD as it is affectionately called, certainly seems to have made an indelible mark in the pith of all those who visit it.

Having heard many a tale about their culinary concoctions and being an avid foodie, it was but obvious that Metrolife would find itself at its door, sooner rather than later.

For people who stay elsewhere, a Metro train drop on the Yellow Line station of GTB Nagar is the most convenient way to get there. One can take a rickshaw or even walk till Big Yellow Door, whetting the appetite with each stride one takes.

While on the way to BYD, Metrolife noticed many other eateries that seemed bigger and more established. However, none of them had a jam packed floor with a bevy of prospective patrons waiting their turn outside.

The wait seemed to be longer than we would have liked but then as they say “Good things come to those who wait” and we would not be disappointed. Seventeen minutes after putting in a request for a table, Metrolife was ushered in to the corner table.

Service was prompt with a menu reaching one’s hands within 30 seconds of being seated but what impressed us even more was that the order arrived five minutes after it had been placed, thus proving that fast food can be efficient too, especially since the restaurant was full and orders were flying in.

BYD has a host of dishes that it is famous for but we only had time and means to try a couple. The first order was The BYD Cheese Bomb Burger, their Holy Grail of sorts which comes in both vegetarian and non-vegetarian forms.

For a sum of Rs 110, one can safely say that this burger ranks second in one’s personal top five, losing out to the one, we had in Shillong almost two years ago. The burger was fresh and the blend of spices used to make the patty was balanced delightfully to toy with the taste buds and the extra cheese has always been a heart winner.

Once the burger had been dispatched, the attention turned to another one of its fan favourites, the Pasta Napolitano. Al dente pasta that was so silky and smooth one could easily mistake it to be a model for many a shampoo advert, lathered in a rich tomato and basil sauce with some parmesan cheese; we knew we had been delivered to the promise land.

We washed this down with Lemon Iced Tea but the menu has many other drinks that are equally acclaimed.

“I come here almost three to four times a week, it’s that good. Whenever we have any occasion to celebrate, we make our way here. The Cheesy Nacho Mexicana and the Chocolate Pump Oreo Shake just bowl me over,” said Shweta, sitting beside us attending her friend’s birthday treat.

“It’s reasonable and it’s fresh. They never fail to impress” was Atul’s response when asked why BYD and not any other place.

Average pocket pinch for a meal for two at BYD will be between Rs 500-600. Head down there right now and be dazzled by the Door.
