It is not quite often that one sees four girls playing different instruments and trying out genres like soft/hard rock, punk rock, classic rock, etc.

The ‘Void’ is a four-piece girl band which stands out in the music arena. It was over a basketball practice session at college that the band was formed. Rithika, Anagha, Suvarna and Vinaya broke down all barriers and entered a male-dominated music scenario.

“Often we notice that the crowd is rather sceptical when they see us setting up on stage. But once we begin, their expression changes from  confusion to shock and by the time we are done, they love the show,” says Rithika, a band member. They started with the name ‘Maiden Raga’ before figuring out the line-up and after they got serious with music, they renamed their band as ‘The Void’.

“We feel that people’s life have become very monotonous, there is a lack of music in people’s life . So we decided to fill that void through our music hence the name ‘The Void’,” says Vinaya.

They draw their inspiration from classic rock and each of the band members have various inspiration which helps the band to experiment. While their music falls under the genre Reggae Rock, where they are still experimenting on different kind of music to find their feet in the musical platform.

“We play different genres but good old rock is our favourite one. Since we like playing different genres, our instrument line-up for every song is usually different and quite often you would see us quickly switching instruments after every song.”

The band’s best gig was at the ‘Strawberry Fields’ as it had a huge audience and the girls had super fun performing at that event.

While Rithika, Vinaya and Anagha are studying in Mount Carmel College and Suvarna is pursuing law from KLE College, their jamming session is mostly after college hours.

“Since me, Rithika and Vinaya are basketball buddies, we usually jam after college hours and managing time comes very easily because of our basketball sessions,” says Anagha. While Rithika and Suvarna graduate this year, the girls still plan to keep the band going even after their completion of studies.

As a female-based band, the biggest challenges the girls face are getting their music out into the male-dominated music scenario. Convincing their families to extend the curfews for jams and gigs is another huge challenge.

The ‘Void’ has got more opportunities to perform at various venues. In fact Rithika says, the audience loves our sounds and many organisers love to have us perform at their venue.
