Five people were killed on the spot and as many as 17 sustained injuries when the multi-utility vehicle in which they were travelling, to attend a wedding, toppled on the National Highway no 4 near Hunasakatte in Davangere taluk on Sunday.
They were all heading towards Reddy camp near Ballari from Davangere for the wedding. The injured were rushed to Chitradurga District Hospital for treatment.
Cause not certain
Police said the van toppled when its axle blade got cut. Negligent and rash driving could have also caused the accident, they added.
The deceased have been identified as Ramakrishnappa (35), Rajappa (30), Lakshmamma (45), Lakshmi (42) and driver Ashraf Ulla (35) all residents of Nittur village in Harihar taluk.
Deputy Superintendent of Police (Davangere Rural ) G S Nyamegowda visited the accident spot.
A case has been registered in this regard.
