Woman dies of burns

A 22-year-old woman succumbed to burn injuries in a private hospital at Beereshwara Layout near Uttaralli on Sunday.

The victim was identified as Saumya, a garment factory worker. She was married to Ravi Kumar for a year, said the police.

In a complaint the victim’s mother, Yashoda, said that Kumar had set her daughter on fire. Kumar on the other hand claims that Saumya immolated herself, said the police. He is taken under custody for further enquiry, said the police.

The couple married after a brief courtship, but in the last few months differences had developed between them. They fought frequently and they had a spat on Sunday night, said the police.

When the neighbours heard the alarm raised by Saumya, they rushed in to find her ablaze. They doused the fire and rushed her to a nearby hospital, said the police.

She had suffered 80 per cent burns and succumbed to the injuries at the hospital, said the police.
