Demanding that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP president Amit Shah must quit if their party loses the Delhi elections, Congress on Monday fell short of accepting a similar corollary for its vice president Rahul Gandhi.

“Modi and Shah should resign first as they have made the polls a referendum on the working of the Central government. The Prime Minister jumped whole hog into campaigning along with his Cabinet,” AICC spokesman Ajoy Kumar told reporters here.

However, he ducked questions if Congress would search for an alternative should it fail at the hustings, repeating several times: “We will talk about it later, but first Modi and Shah should quit.”

Meanwhile, AICC General Secretary and Congress’ chief ministerial candidate in Delhi Ajay Maken reportedly said he is prepared to quit all party positions should he fail to win the Sadar Bazar assembly seat.

Maken, in-charge of the AICC’s Communication Department, was also the Chairman of the Congress Campaign Committee for the Delhi elections.
