Congress gropes for answers for Delhi loss

Last Updated 11 February 2015, 20:18 IST

Shocked at the outcome of the Delhi Assembly election, the Congress leadership is struggling to find answers for the party’s abject surrender at the hustings and fix responsibility.

Murmurs against the party’s campaign strategy and involvement of certain leaders in the election have started in the party.

A section of the leaders said while the Congress wanted to make development during its 15-year regime in the capital an election issue, there was reluctance to rope in former chief minister Sheila Dikshit for the campaign.

“Wish Sheila Dikshit was roped in too for campaign,” Anil Shastri, Congress Working Committee member said. Another leader wanted a change in the AICC as the current crop of office bearers were unable to come up with fresh ideas.

Delhi unit chief Arvinder Singh Lovely developed cold feet and withdrew from the contest days after his candidature was announced from Gandhinagar assembly seat. Senior leaders had to rally round former minister A K Walia to ensure that he stays in the fray despite his ill-health.

Though Congress leaders claimed Delhi debacle had “registered strongly with us”, they appeared to rejoice the loss of arch rival BJP.
