New research has found that the Eiffel Tower in Paris and Burj Khalifa in Dubai, the world’s tallest building, are among the top three popular backdrops for taking  selfies.

The study, conducted by the website AttractionTix, used data from Instagram – one of the largest social media sites – to come up with a list of the most popular global selfie sites.

The 125-year-old Paris landmark was the clear winner with 10,700 hits for “Eiffel Tower selfie”. Disney World theme park in Florida, USA, came second (9,870 hits), followed by the Dubai landmark Burj Khalifa (8,860 hits). Next on the list were the Big Ben clock tower in London (8,780) and then the Empire State Building in New York (8,430).

Other landmarks among the top 10 global selfie sites on Instagram include Disneyland Paris, the Colosseum in Rome, and Top of the Rock, a sightseeing attraction in New York located in midtown Manhattan at historic Rockefeller Center.

The top 40 selfie sites included many UK landmarks and attractions, like the London Eye, Buckingham Palace and the Madame Tussauds waxworks. Others in the top 40 were the Sydney Opera House, the Statue of Liberty, Kew Gardens in London, the Leaning Tower of Pisa in Italy, and St. Paul’s Cathedral, London.
