The CCB sleuths on Friday arrested three touts while they were receiving money from an aspirant for the post of police sub-inspector (Civil and Armed Reserve), promising him a rank in the selection list.

According to police, the arrested have been identified as Meenakshi, 48, a resident of Vidyaranyapura and a native of  Kolar, Chitti Babu, 58, a native of Chittoor and  Abraham Chacko, 59, of Karwar. The trio were caught red-handed while trying to strike a deal with a decoy in a restaurant near Anand Rao Circle.

The police, acting on credible information, had sent a decoy equipped with hidden camera, for identifying the touts on February 10. The decoy managed to talk to Babu, who asked him to come back the next day. On February 11, the decoy went to the same spot and met Babu, who introduced him to Meenakshi.

The woman claimed to have contacts in the selection committee. The duo demanded Rs 30 lakh from the decoy to get him a rank in the final selection. But he stated that he cannot trust them and he does not have such a huge amount. After negotiation, the two asked the decoy to pay them Rs two lakh in cash the next day. Meenakshi even promised to give him cheques and her identity proof as surety, police said.

On February 13, the decoy met the trio at the restaurant and handed over the cash. In return, Meenakshi gave the decoy two cheques signed by her and an identity proof. The CCB sleuths, who were on the watch, immediately arrested all the three.

“During the interrogation, it was learnt that Meenakshi was working as a teacher around three years ago in a school in KR Puram and has cheated several people of their money. She was also working as a real estate agent along with Babu and Chacko.”

“Babu is a pharmaceutical distributor at Chittoor while Chacko is an electronics service engineer. Both had come down to the City around a month ago and were staying in a lodge near Anand Rao Circle. The trio knew each other from past three years and hatched a conspiracy to make some fast money. They falsely claimed that they had influence over the selection committee,” said a senior police officer. High Grounds police have registered a case.
