Rain, snow ease cold conditions in Kashmir

Kashmir Valley received fresh snowfall and rains even as the minimum temperature across the Valley and Ladakh region increased for the second consecutive day on Monday.

A MeT Department official said the famous ski resort of Gulmarg in north Kashmir, which received four inch of fresh snow, recorded minimum temperature of minus 2.0 degrees Celsius, against minus 2.2 degrees previous night.

Pahalgam hill resort in south Kashmir, which serves as base camp for the annual Amarnath yatra, received 9.2 mm of rainfall and the minimum temperature there rose by four degrees to settle at 0.4 degrees, he said. Srinagar recorded a minimum temperature of minus 4.8 degree Celsius, up by over 4 degrees from the previous night, the official said, adding the city received 11.1 mm of rainfall during the night.

Leh region recorded a low of minus 1.1 degrees Celsius – nearly nine degrees up from minus 9.9 degrees Celsius on Sunday, he said and added Gulmarg was also the only place in Kashmir where the night temperature went below the freezing point. He said widespread rain or snow would occur at many places over Kashmir in next 24 hours.
