Social activist from Mandya, Mallige called upon the women to develop the strength to protect themselves against the atrocities.

Speaking at the state-wide rally organised to condemn the increasing violence against women, the activist said the government should also take stringent measures to curb the violence against women.

Human rights advocate Sheela Ramanathan alleged that the government has failed to initiate new ordinance introduced against the sexual abuses in the aftermath of Delhi gang rape case.  This has resulted in the increasing violence against the women in State. The organisations should pressurize the government to take strict measures against the women atrocity cases.

The media do have social responsibility, she added and said the advertisements portrayal of women has increased the sexual abuse against women.

The advertisements portray women as a commodity. There is a need to create awareness on the media responsibility, she stressed.

The state-wide jatha is organised by leading women organisations like ‘Mahila Munnade’, ‘Karnataka Janashakthi’ and movement against sexual abuse.

The rally arrived in Udupi district which would later go to Uttara Kannada and conclude at Freedom Park on March 1.  A street play on ‘society without sexual abuses’, the screening of the documentary ‘That Day after Everyday’ and talk with students were organised as a part of the rally.
