Last Updated 22 February 2015, 19:35 IST

The students of ESI Medical College, Rajajinagar, who have been left in a lurch since the ESI Corporation announced its intention to discontinue its medical colleges, are now pinning their hopes on an assurance given by Union Minister for Law and Justice D V Sadananda Gowda.

On Saturday, Sadananda Gowda met the students along with former minister Suresh Kumar. Gowda assured the students that he would raise the issue in Parliament.
A student from the college told Deccan Herald, “He has promised to get back to us within a week with good news.”  Last week, the students staged a protest demanding clarity on their future.

Facebook update

A Facebook update by Suresh Kumar further elaborates, “Took Union Law Minister Sri DV Sadananda Gowda and our Bengaluru Central MP PC Mohan to the college to interact with the worried students ... After listening to their concerns, DVS assured the students that along with MP P C Mohan, he will take up the issue with Union Labour Minister Sri Bandaru Dattatreya under whose department ESIC comes...”

“He said that all necessary steps will be taken to safeguard the interests and the future career of the students.”

Anxious students

Meanwhile, the students continue to be anxious as the State government has failed to address their concerns, in spite of them trying to meet Medical Education Minister Sharan Prakash Patil.

The students are worried that their medical degree will be of no value if the college shuts down.
