Many top rank holders in the Postgraduate Entrance Test (PGET) conducted by the Consortium of Medical, Engineering and Dental Colleges Karnataka (COMEDK for medical and dental courses this year are first doctors in their families.

The PGET results were announced on Tuesday. As many as 11,286 candidates had taken the test for medical stream and 4,124 students for the dental stream.

Ankur Mittal from Delhi and Banda Ravi Teja from Telangana have bagged the first and second ranks respectively in the medical stream. In the dental stream, Varsha Budakoti from Uttarakhand bagged the first rank and Malavika S from Tamil Nadu the second.

Varsha Palled from Davangere, who has secured the fifth rank, is among the top 10 rank holders in the dental stream. In medical, three students from Karnataka are among the top 10 rank holders. Junaid Ahmed Jamadar from Hubballi has secured fourth rank while Bhavana K and Nikita K Jain, both from Bengaluru, secured sixth and seventh rank, respectively.

“I prepared from my notes. I believe handwritten notes are important. I compiled all my doubts and referred standard books to get clarification on them,” Mittal told Deccan Herald. He aspires to get an MD seat in General Medicine.

Mittal, who studied MBBS at Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College, Belagavi, has also secured 838th rank in the All India Postgraduate Medical Entrance Exam (AIPGMEE). This was his second attempt at the exam. Last year, during internship, he took the COMEDK PGET and secured 364th rank. Since General Medicine was his dream branch, he sat the test again, he said.

Like Mittal, second rank holder Ravi Teja is also the first member of his family to study medicine. He managed the top score after hectic preparations for six months. He also has scored well in AIPGMEE (rank 22) and JIPMER entrance test (rank 40).

He too is eyeing a seat in General Medicine. An alumnus of SDM College of Medical Sciences and Hospital, Dharwad, he was a gold medallist in the MBBS programme, topping the university in three subjects.
