HC questions BBMP on model roads

Last Updated 02 March 2015, 19:49 IST

The High Court on Monday questioned whether BBMP’s model roads Cubbon Road, Race Course Road and Sankey Road could be called model roads.

While hearing a suo motu PIL about the increasing noise and air pollution in the City, a PIL on footpath encroachments and another PIL on removal of transformers from footpaths, a single bench said that the City’s growth must be compromised with, if PILs are being filed for every civic problem in the City.

Justice Manjunath questioned the government as to how they were synchronising the traffic movement as the route from Ballari Road to the High Court itself had innumerable signals and traffic jams. If roads are widened, footpaths get shrunk and vice-versa.

 Notice ordered

The High Court has ordered notice to the State government in a petition seeking directions for better roads and train facility to commute from Bengaluru to Mangaluru as the existing facilities were not good enough. The petitioner had contended that although there were six roads to Mangaluru,  traffic was prohibited on many roads and one has to travel for 662 km to reach Mangaluru via Honnavara.  The new trains announced in the previous railway budget had not been made operational.
