KSOU records 47 pc results; 28,007 persons to get degrees

Like previous years, a majority of the candidates graduating from Karnataka State Open University (KSOU) will be women. Of the 28,007 candidates to be conferred with various degrees, 17,314 are women, while 10,693 are male candidates.

Addressing a press meet, K J Suresh, Registrar (Evaluation) of KSOU said that a total of 59,314 candidates had appeared for examinations. Passing percentage recorded during the academic year is 47.21 per cent. While 17,314 of the 35,860 female candidates (48.28 pc) cleared the examinations, 10,693 of 23,454 male candidates (45.59 pc) qualified.

“Last year, the varsity had recorded a passing percentage of 38 per cent. There has been improvement in results during the current academic year,” he said. He said that inclusion of internal marks was one of the reasons for the improvement in results.
During the convocation, 12 male and seven female candidates will receive PhDs in 11 subjects.

Among the persons receiving PhDs include Manika Girinath, an IAS officer, who has completed her doctoral thesis in management.

Lion’s share

Women will also receive a lion’s share of gold medals and cash prizes to be distributed during the day.

 Of a total of 34 medals and 24 cash prizes shared by 37 candidates, 24 are women.
Among the 28,007 candidates, 18,757 candidates will be conferred with master’s degree (11,16 women candidates); 9,231 candidates will be conferred with bachelor’s degree (5,511 women) and 1,371 candidates (635 women) will be conferred with diploma certificates.

Humanities subject

Suresh said that most of the degrees will be conferred in humanities subjects, followed by Commerce. He noted that 439 students will be conferred degrees in Science.

“Despite the shortcomings regarding lab facilties for Science subjects at KSOU, the number of candidates who have cleared the examinations is encouraging. The varsity has been working towards improving the lab facility for Science streams,” he added.

Massive programme

The varsity will take up a massive programme to ensure that all the candidates who have enrolled at KSOU since 1996, and have not completed their examinations yet, to clear the examinations.

 There is a proposal for the programme in front of the varsity. Many candidates have kept two or three papers pending. The varsity is thinking of provide them an opportunity, he said. A decision regarding the same will be announced following a meeting with the Board of Management of the varsity. He added that Bengalore University had taken up a similar programme in the past. Convocation address will be delivered by the chairperson of Prasar Bharathi, A Surya Prakash.

Exams rescheduled

Following delay over the distribution of study materials of Kannada, History and Sociology of BA candidates, KSOU has now rescheduled examination for these candidates. Suresh said that examinations will commence for students who have these subjects from July 10.

Other examinations have also been rescheduled by the varsity.
MA and MCom exams, which usually commence between May last week or June first week, has now been advanced to May 6. Similarly, BA and BCom exams, will commence from June 1.
