3rd dam proposed to mitigate water crisis

MLA Pramod Madhwaraj has said a third dam will be constructed across River Swarna to supply drinking water to Udupi City.

Briefing reporters, he said Udupi City requires storage of water for 120 days during the summer. At present, there are two dams across Swarna River at Baje and Shiroor villages. But water stored in these dams were enough only for 70 days.

The third dam will provide 50 days of water storage.

The third dam would be constructed near End Point area in Manipal. Expert team will be visiting the city to make a study on the third dam.

Stating that Rs 30 crore is released under KUSEMP programme for improving drinking water facility in Udupi, the MLA said the amount would be used to construct distributing channels to supply water at elevated areas. Rupees 55 crore will be utilised for laying UGD works in the City.

Development works

The MLA said that the government has approved development works worth Rs 23.62 crore in Udupi assembly constituency. And a sum of Rs 90 lakh has been sanctioned for the development of a connecting stretch at Nalkuru-Kajke-Santhekatte-Jomlu villages.
 
Rs 90 lakh has been earmarked for the development of Tenkanidiyur-Kodavur road under NABARD and Tourism department programme.

Another Rs 187 lakh is allocated for the development of Kadike-Gujjarbettu-Hoode road, while 37 lakh is released for the development of Malpe-Tottam road.

These works will be taken up under NABARD Fisheries department programme.

The MLA said under ‘Namma Grama Namma Raste,’ a sum of Rs 134.29 lakh is released for Cherkadi Gudarikallu-Nujinabailu-Madi-Girijana Colony connecting road. Rs 143.72 lakh is released for Nalkuru-Nancharu Heskunda road.

A sum of Rs 305.52 lakh is released for a  bridge adjoining  the Kunjalu-Halekette Adjeelu road.  
He added that the remaining Rs 193 lakh released under Nagarotthana fund is used for the  UGD work connecting Syndicate Circle and District Commissioner’s office in Manipal.
