Last Updated 10 March 2015, 17:32 IST

The Udupi Division of All India Gramin Dak Sevaks Union staged indefinite protest before Head Post Office demanding justifiable minimum basic amenities to Gramin Dak Sevaks who were previously called extra departmental agents.

Udupi Division of All India Gramin Dak Sevaks Union President Basava Billava said Gramin Dak Sevaks are rendering valuable services in rural India for last 150 years for meagre salary. He said they are paid Rs 5,000 to Rs 10,000.

They perform almost all services introduced by the department but time factor has not been provided for all these functions.

The point system is unscientific. GDS employees perform varieties of business and hence refixation of working hours has become necessary.

He added they are denied pension, medical facility and eight-hour pay though they  work for more than eight hours.
