Electronic media may not come under PCI

Last Updated 13 March 2015, 19:43 IST

The Press Council of India (PCI) is re-examining its previous proposal to bring electronic media under its jurisdiction.

This development came after the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India, in a report on cross-media ownership, recommended that the government should not regulate the media.

Instead, there should be a single regulatory authority for both print and electronic media, Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore told the Lok Sabha in reply to a written question on Friday.

The council is reconsidering its previous proposal to amend the Press Council Act to bring electronic media under its jurisdiction.

“This (bringing electronic media under the PCI jurisdiction) may be considered after receiving the views of the council’s chairman,” Rathore said. He was replying to a question on the issue asked by Congress’ Tumkur parliamentarian S P Muddahanume Gowda.

Justice Markandey Katju, a former chairman of the PCI, had recommended setting up of a media council and brining both print and electronic media under its ambit.
