Three members of a gang have been arrested for robbing car drivers by impersonating police and army men. The gang used to target drivers on isolated roads by signalling with blinkers to stop for checking, police said on Monday.

Suspects Ajimuddin, 24, Jatin Arora, 21, and Dharmender, 22, are residents of north-east Delhi’s Shahdara.

On Saturday, a team of Nand Nagri police station was informed that members of the gang were armed and travelling in a Hyundai Accent car in the area.

“The area near Nand Nagri bus stand was barricaded and the suspected car was signalled to stop. The accused were apprehended despite the driver of the car whipping out a knife to threaten the police team,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (North East) R A Sanjeev.
A loaded country-made pistol of .315 bore, a loaded country-made pistol of 12 bore, and knives were recovered from them. “A khaki jacket and trousers and a handheld traffic blinker were also recovered from the car,” Sanjeev added.

The culprits told police that they used to wear police and army uniforms near Cantonment area and signal vehicles to stop for checking. They would ask drivers then to produce their driving licences and the vehicle registration certificates.

“When a driver would get busy with the documents, the gang members would overpower and drag him to the rear seat at gunpoint,” Sanjeev said. The victims were dumped at another isolated spot after being robbed and forced to withdraw cash from an ATM. They used to dispose of the cars in Sambhal district of Uttar Pradesh.

Ajimuddin has been found involved in about 25 criminal cases of Delhi, Noida and Ghaziabad.

FIRs are registered with New Usmanpur, Anand Vihar and GTB Enclave police stations. A fresh case has been registered under Arms Act with Nand Nagri police station.
