Zilla Panchayat Vice President Sathish Kumpala said in spite of spending crores of rupees on drinking water projects in the district, authorities have failed to mitigate drinking water woes in the district.

Speaking after inaugurating the ‘national rural drinking water and sanitation awareness week’as a part of nationwide campaign that began in the district on Tuesday, he said “inspite of district receiving heavy rainfall, the district faces acute shortage of water during summer. We have failed in effective utilisation of rain water.
With the depletion of ground water table, a permanent drinking water project should be the need of the hour. Instead of depending on borwells, new permanent water sources needs to be tapped to provide clean water to the people of the district,” he said.
He said the government should implement schemes that would help in increasing the ground water table. “It is a tragedy that even after sinking the borewell for 1,200 feet deep, we are failing to get enough water in the district,” he added.  ZP CEO Sreevidya said the government is keen on ensuring potable water supply to all water-starved areas in the district.  The programme will be conducted in district, , town panchayat, taluk and panchayat levels with an intention to educate people on drinking clean potable water. Consuming clean water will prevent the outbreak of diseases if any.

There is a need to ensure that every household has toilet facilities and the people make use of toilets. The people should join hands with the authorities in maintaining the surroundings clean. Participation of the people in the awareness week is essential.

Zilla Panchayat President Asha Thimmappa Gowda said that potable and clean drinking water is right of an individual. The garbage should not be dumped in public places. There is a need to maintain cleanliness all over.
