NCP's U-turn on Vidarbha

Last Updated 13 January 2010, 17:45 IST

At a press conference here, NCP Maharashtra chief Madhukar Pichad said his party has already demanded setting up of States Re-organisation Commission to look into demands for smaller states in the country.

The BJP is the only other national party which has openly supported a separate Vidarbha state. The Congress has not made its stand clear, while the Shiv Sena and the MNS are dead against it.

Pichad said defeat of political leaders demanding smaller states in elections is no indicator that people have given up on the demand for smaller states.
He said it is wrong to construe that the demand for Vidarbha is a division of the Marathi-speaking state, for which 105 people had laid down their lives during the Saynkuta Maharashtra movement. He said the NCP would support any resolution concerning Vidarbha in the state legislature.
