BJP bid to move previlege motion against Reddi

Last Updated 23 March 2015, 21:08 IST

The BJP on Monday tried to move a breach of privilege motion against Bengaluru City Police Commissioner M N Reddi, in the Legislative Council.

Making a submission on the notice to move the motion against the officer, BJP MLC Ganesh Karnik said Reddi had commented against Leader of the Opposition K S Eshwarappa. Eshwarappa had said the police commissioner should not have made a statement which effectively meant that Ravi’s death was a suicide.

Reddi had reacted to Eshwarappa’s comments and said as a responsible police officer he had done his duty. Taking exception to this statement of Reddi, Karnik said this amounted to breach of privilege of the member. The officer should not have reacted to a statement made by the member in the legislature.

Joining the issue, R K Siddaramanna (BJP), said the matter need not be referred to the privilege committee of the House as the chairman himself can take a decision.

Leader of the House S R Patil said the police commissioner’s comment must be taken into consideration only after it is investigated. “The house will not tolerate any breach of privilege against its members. But Reddi’s statement must be considered by the Chairman after a thorough examination of the facts,” he said.

Reddi received support from the Congress MLC Motamma, who argued that Reddi only spoke about his commitment and duties and did not name the Leader of the Opposition.
