India Post will undergo a makeover and introduce innovative products to meet the competition. To begin with, Core Banking Solutions (CBS) will be rolled out at all computerised post offices (POs) across the State.

Addressing a gathering at the Federation of Karnataka Chambers of Commerce and Industry here on Tuesday, Chief Post Master General (CPMG), Karnataka, M S Ramanujan said that of the around 10,000 post offices in the State, 2000 were fully computered. “Presently, 336 computerised post offices in Karnataka have CBS facility. By the end of this year, the facility will be extended to the remaining POs and by March 2016 the entire postal department in the State will be switched to Core Banking System platform,” Ramanujan said.

He said that the postal administration had come under a lot of threat due to the Internet, cell phones and other advances in technology. “While the European postal department among others has adapted to technology quickly, we have missed the initial buzz but have woken up,” he said.

Ramanujan said that the ATM at Bangalore GPO would be inaugurated by first week of April by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah. The ATMs will be set up at four more post offices in Bengaluru, he added

E-commerce players

The officers from Department of Posts (DoP), Karnataka Circle said that, in the year 2011-12 the Karnataka postal circle reported a revenue of Rs 589 crore and the revenue shot up to Rs 920 crore during 2014-15. The department has tied up with  e-commerce players such as Amazon, Myntra among others to distribute their products.

“Presently,  we are offering same-day delivery service  to ten core areas of Bengaluru. We plan to extend this service to the whole City soon. Similarly, an Automated Mail Processing Centre (APMC) will come up  near the Bengaluru International Airport and government has allotted land near the Airport for the facility. It will be similar to the one set up in Delhi. The scanning of letters, checking of the addresses and other activities will be completely automoated,” an official from the office of the CPMG said.
