Varsities must create human resources: Professor

Universities and educational institutions should not create graduates alone. Also it should help create human resources to cater to the needs of international level, SDM College (Ujire) Principal Prof Yashovarma said.

Speaking at felicitation for prize winners of inter-university sports and cultural competitions and inter-collegiate sports champion for the year 2014-15 here on Wednesday, he said along with education, opportunities should be given to take part in extra curricular activities.

Extra curricular activities help in personality development of students.

Opportunities for women

Olympian Sahana Kumari said women are getting opportunities to excel in all walks of life. “My parents have supported me to excel in my sports career.”

Sahana Kumari was felicitated by Mangalore University. Twenty students who have participated in various cultural programmes in national and state level competitions and brought laurels to the university and 128 students who have won medals in sports competitions were given cash prizes on the occasion.

Inter-collegiate competition winners were also given awards. In Mangalore University level inter-collegiate sports overall championship was won by Alva’s College, Moodbidri  while SDM College, Ujire won second place and Mangalore University team won third
place.

Medals

This year, athletes from university have won 10 gold, 11 silver and 9 bronze medals in the national-level inter-university sports meet.

In addition, a student won bronze medal in the men’s category of cross country in the national-level inter-university meet.

The other big achievements made by university students include - bronze medal in women’s kho-kho, gold in hockey and fourth place in cricket in south zone inter-university meet, gold in ball badminton in national-level meet. The students have also won medals in kusti, power lifting, weight lifting, body building and athletics.
