“One could strike water only at a depth of 800 to 1,000 feet. Farmers in the district are dependent on borewells and rains for agriculture. The ground water table has depleted due to scanty rains and the Irrigation Department should take steps for replenishing it,” the MLA said while inaugurating Rs 20-lakh work taken up by Minor Irrigation Department, recently.

Varthur said that more emphasis should be laid on construction of check dams to collect water so as to recharge the ground water table. Congress Rural Block president Begli Suryaprakash, City Municipal Council member Somashekhar, and others were present on the occasion.
