Akshaya Tritiya’ is here and people are purchasing gold and silver with great enthusiasm. The fascination for the yellow metal has always existed in our country and Bengalureans are gearing up for the day.

Some of them have been  observing the day. “We have always followed the custom of buying gold or some precious metal on the day,” says Nirmal Jain, a businessman. “Gold is a pure investment and a guaranteed metal. And on this particular occasion, it marks good luck. The belief is that anything new bought on this day stays with you and signifies good luck,” he says. Nirmal adds that he will be buying gold coins for the family. “These are an investment. Also, with the many advertisements that come out during this time, everyone can buy something.”

Sukesh Agrawal, a professional, doesn’t follow the tradition but buys something new on this day. “There are so many discounts on gold and silver items that one ends up buying something. It is a great time to invest. Though it is not a part of our tradition, I bought a coin sometime back on the advice of a friend. Since then, I’ve seen a smooth transition in my life and at work.”

Though many purchase gold coins and pure gold items on the day, there are others who also want to lap up the discounts and invest in some elaborate ornaments. “I’m looking into the latest collections of uncut diamond jewellery. This is the best time to purchase them,” says Sneha, a software consultant. She adds that since this is the perfect day to purchase gold, she wants it to be a special addition to her collection.

Even celebrities have their own experiences with the festival. Sandalwood actress Ramya Barna says that her mother always makes it a point to order or purchase something on the day. “My mother has ordered something for me and my sister. The day is about a new beginning and we like to start it on a positive note. To start something on an auspicious note is always special.”

Jewellery showroom officials say that business has increased on the occasion. Nikhil Jain, coordinator of Sri Krishna Diamonds & Jewellery, Commercial Street, says that business has increased by 40 per cent. “People are purchasing waistbelts, half sets and long sets and other items like ‘chutti’ in gold. They are also buying silver and oxidised lamps and idols. But coins have been a constant favourite.”

Many pre-orders have also been placed. “The bookings are mostly for temple jewellery sets among others,” he adds.

Says Gautam Chand, managing director of Navrathan Jewellers, “People mostly opt for plain jewellery on this day. North-Indian styled jewellery and diamond jewellery do not sell much during this time. Necklaces, zodiac signs and rings sell more. Also, the trends which were fashionable in the past are in style again,” he sums up.
