The State Cabinet on Thursday gave its approval for distribution of bicycles to eighth standard students studying in government schools for the financial year 2015-16.

Addressing a press conference after the Cabinet meeting, Law Minister T B Jayachandra said that as many as 5.5 lakh bicycles will be distributed at a cost of Rs 199.30 crore. While the bicycle for boys will be blue in colour, the girls’ bicycles will be maroon in shade. The cost for each bicycle for boys is Rs 3,580, and that for each girl’s bicycle is Rs 3,650.

The Cabinet gave its nod for a relief package of Rs 95 crore for the public enterprise Mysore Sugar factory Cooperation Limited (MSL) in Mandya. While Rs 20 crore will be allocated towards the company as a working capital, the rest of the amount will be to settle its outstanding dues. While admitting that the company has become a “white elephant,” Jayachandra said the Cabinet wanted to resurrect MSL.

The Cabinet has decided to keep all the serving members of KPSC under suspension till the cases against them are resolved.

Previously also, the Cabinet had written to the Governor to suspend nine sitting and retired members of the KPSC for their role in irregularities in filling 362 gazetted posts in 2011.

A proposal to provide exemption of social impact assessment for the Yettinahole project was, however, deferred till the next meeting. Jayachandra said the government was in a quandary over whether to accept the Centre’s ordinance on land acquisition and start land acquisitions or wait till the political issue is resolved in New Delhi. “We will take a decision in this regard after discussing with the party high command,” he said.
