Chief Minister Siddaramaiah announced here on Friday that Gandhi Bhavans will be constructed in all the districts across the State.

Speaking at the inauguration of the programme - “Karnatakadalli Gandhi Modala Hejje” - organised by the Karnataka Gandhi Smaraka Nidhi, Siddaramaiah said younger generations should be largely benefitted by the teachings of Gandhiji.

The programme was organised to mark the centenary celebrations of Gandhiji’s maiden visit to the State on May 8, 1915.

His ideals and principles are relevant even today. The Congress government is committed to encourage the programmes launched by the Gandhi Smaraka Nidhi, he said.

Gandhiji wanted every member of society to enjoy equal opportunity and this was the motto of the Congress government also, he said and added that a few vested interests were trying to divide the society in the name of caste and religion. It is under such circumstances that the principles of Gandhiji, like non-violence and brotherhood, came to the rescue.

Siddaramaiah said Karnataka and the Father of the Nation shared a strong bond. Gandhiji had visited Karnataka at least 18 times, which was a matter of great pride for all Kannadigas.

“I was born in 1948 and hence, was not lucky enough to see Gandhiji. I was introduced to the great leader only through his inspiring speeches and influential writings,” Siddaramaiah added.

Speaking on the occasion, freedom fighter H S Doreswamy opined: “Going by the recent developments, it was unfortunate to note that the State was turning into land of criminals. Large sums of money was allotted for the implementation of five-year plans, while, basic concerns like poverty remained unattended,” he said.

Members of the Kannada Chalavali Vatal Paksha took out a procession from Mysore Bank Circle to Kempegowda Road. Minister for Information and Public Relations Roshan Baig inaugurated an exhibition on “Gandhi” at the Gandhi Bhavan on Kumara Krupa Road.
