India should develop own model to become economic power: Prabhu

Union Minister for Railways Suresh Prabhu expressed the need for India developing its own model of development that would lead the country in becoming economic power in the world.

He was addressing the 14th annual convocation of Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU) at the varsity headquarters “Jnana Sangama” here on Saturday.

The Union minister said India has inherited wisdom from thousands of years of civilization and traditional knowledge. “We must use our human capital that will contribute towards making our country the largest economy. India is on the threshold of expanding its economy and the world has been waiting to work with us. There are huge opportunities for all of us to make India the world’s largest economic power. We hope to become 20 trillion dollar economy by 2040,” he said.

United States, China, Japan and Israel have their own models of development. Israel would soon become a large knowledge-based economy. Our innovative ideas should solve the problems of society and the society should largely benefit from it, Prabhu said.
Dr V K Aatre, former secretary, Department of Defence Research and Development and Scientific Advisor to Defence Minister and P Shyama Raju, Chancellor, Reva University, Bengaluru, were presented with honorary degrees in Doctor of Science by the Governor and VTU Chancellor, Vajubhai Vala.

Ahad Tarade, a student of KLS Gogte Institute of Technology, Belagavi, who has scored the highest marks in civil engineering, was presented with 13 gold medals by the Governor.
He has secured first rank, highest aggregate marks in all the eight semesters in BE Civil Engineering and also, has bagged the highest marks among all the rankholders of various branches of BE and highest marks among the students of all the engineering colleges affiliated to VTU.
