Udupi tops State in SSLC pass percentage, DK rises to 8th spot

From 16th position in 2013-14, Udupi district has topped the State in pass percentage of SSLC examinations during 2014-15, while Dakshina Kannada district improved the pass percentage and reached eighth position from 29th.

Swathi K of Indraprastha Vidyalaya, Uppinangady has secured second place in the state with 622/625 marks.

The total number of students appeared for exam in DK is 33,070, of which, 29,548 have passed, thus achieveing a pass percentage of 89.35 per cent. Female students have outnumbered male students in the pass percentage. Out of 16,518 female students, 15,459 students have passed (93.59 per cent). On the other hand, out 16,552 boys, 14,089 have passed.

Dakshina Kannada district had stood third in 2005 with a pass percentage of 73.9. In 2006, DK stood at 11th position when its pass percentage slipped to 72.87. In 2007, it stood fifth with 82.09 per cent; sixth in 2008 (76.6 per cent); fourth in 2009 (82.02 per cent), eighth in 2010 (72.750). Though the percentage had increased in 2011, the position had slipped to 21 in 2011 and the position had increased to seventh in 2012. In 2013, the district stood at 24th position with 78.77 per cent.

Last year, the pass percentage had increased to 79.15 per cent and the position had slipped to 29.

Speaking to Deccan Herald, DDPI Walter D’Mellow said that there has been drastic improvement in the pass percentage and the position of the district in the result sheet. Teachers have worked hard for improving the results.

“To improve the results, special classes were conducted in schools for the students who were weak in their studies. Night class programmes were conducted for slow learners as a part of Mission 95 Plus in Puttur and Mangaluru taluk.”

Under Mission 95 Plus, the teachers had focused on those students who had scored between 0 and 35 marks in the mid -term exams.

A programme called Vidyarthi Mane Mana Beti was launched to instill confidence and also to encourage the students to work hard to achieve success in exam. Under the programme, a team of two teachers had visited the houses either in the morning or evening to instill confidence, he said.

“The teachers had conducted special classes for below average students from July itself,” he said.

‘Mission 40 plus- 60 plus’
The ‘Mission 40 plus- 60 plus’ chalked out by the officials of the education department in Udupi helped in securing good results. Udupi district had stood at first place with pass percentage of 89.53 in 2011-12 while the result had slipped to third position in 2012-13 (87.68 pc).

However, it stood at 16th position with pass percentage of 85.36 per cent last year. Out of 15,929 students appeared for the exam, 14,873 have passed. Out of 8038 boys, 7314 have passed and 7,559 female students out of 7,891 have passed.

To improve the results in the district, the officials from education department had analysed the mid-term results. Out of 15,677 students appeared for the exam, 10,036 students had passed. Those who had failed mid-term exams were given special training.

“The weak students were asked to study select lessons so as to score atleast 40 marks in the exam. Apart from this, personality development programmes and programmes to instil confidence were held. Subject inspectors were entrusted with the responsibility to improve the results in each subject,” said DDPI Diwakar Shetty.
“The systematic planning and hard work helped in improving the results. Teachers have played a vital role in improving the pass percentage,” he added.

Top scorers
Aditi Kiran of Indrali English Medium High School in Udupi has scored 616 /625 (98. 56 per cent) in SSLC exam. She is the daughter of Dr Kiran Acharya and Prathima Kiran.

Bearys Sea Side Public School at Kodi and Hira Girls High School at Babbukatte have secured cent per cent results. The toppers in Hira school are Samiha Shad (617), Shareefa Nimra Asif (615) and Nafeesa Masheetha (608). Shreyank U, son of ZP Deputy Secretary Umesh has scored 609 marks (97.44 pc).

Officials hailed
Udupi Deputy Commissioner Vishal has congratulated the officials of department of public instructions for working hard to secure the top position in SSLC examination. The district administration will felicitate the officials at the DC’s office on May 13 at 4 pm.

Dakshina Kannada Deputy Commissioner A B Ibrahim has hailed the performance of SSLC students and effort of the education department officials in improving the pass percentage. “The teachers and the officials had developed different modules to improve the results.

They had implemented plans based on community and subject profile. Several areas were identified and special attention was given. Both Dakshina Kannada and Udupi have done well in the new continuous and comprehensive evaluation (CCE) scheme which was introduced during the year.”
