Two men have been arrested for killing a 25-year-old man over personal enmity in south-east Delhi’s Jaitpur on Tuesday, police said.

The deceased, Nikhil Rai, worked with Gareeb Aadmi Party and lived with family at Jaitpur Extension.

He was shot and his throat was slit by Rakesh and Rahul near Molarband Government Boys Senior Secondary School. The accused are also associated with the party.

According to police, the incident occurred when Nikhil was going to a temple along with his younger brother Ricky at 6 pm. Ricky told police that they were traveling on two motorcycles.

“Rakesh and Rahul were waiting near the school and forced Nikhil to stop his motorcycle,” said a police officer. Ricky was 500 metres behind Nikhil.

Ricky knew that Nikhil was not on good terms with Rakesh and Rahul due to which he stopped away from Nikhil’s motorcycle. Ricky alleged that the two men abused Nikhil and then thrashed him.

“Rakesh also told Rahul that it was a perfect opportunity for them to take revenge against Nikhil. Ricky saw Rahul with a country-made pistol and opening fire at Nikhil,” the officer added.

As Nikhil tried to escape, Rakesh slit his throat with a knife. Nikhil collapsed and may have died in the attack. However, Rakesh wanted to ensure that Nikhil was dead.

“Rakesh took the pistol from Rahul and fired at Nikhil. Five rounds were fired in the attack,” the officer said. Rakesh reloaded the pistol and fled on a motorcycle driven by Rahul. Rakesh was heard saying that they will kill those who dared to confront them.

Declared dead

Soon, a PCR van came to the spot and took Nikhil to Apollo Hospital, where he was declared brought dead.

A case under the Indian Penal Code and the Arms Act has been filed over Ricky’s statement with Jaitpur police station.

According to sources, Nikhil was Gareeb Aadmi Party’s president of ward number 202, Badarpur. He was appointed last week and his posters were also being pasted in the area.
