TN Bar against criticising Karnataka HC judge

Last Updated 14 May 2015, 19:03 IST

The Bar Council of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry on Thursday said it would take legal action against those criticising Karnataka High Court Judge C R Kumaraswamy, who had acquitted AIADMK general secretary J Jayalalitha in the disproportionate assets case.

Bar Council Chairman D Selvam said judges, advocates, law officers and law graduates were all part of the judiciary and the Bar Council of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, the statutory body, could not keep its eyes shut when any one of the four sections comes under criticism.

“Such kind of campaigns will amount to interfering with the administration of justice,” Selvam said. He said, a judgment, once delivered, becomes a public document and the judge who passed the order should not be targeted.

“Everyone has freedom to criticise a judgment, but not the judge who delivered it,” he said, “If this practice of criticism continues, then the Bar Council of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry will be forced to take appropriate legal action against those who are making such criticisms,” he warned.
