Signalling that the Delhi University is getting ready for the roll out of Choice Based Credit System from this academic year, the varsity’s Department of Mathematics has called for a faculty meeting on Thursday to finalise the syllabus for BSc (Hons) Mathematics.

Asking the principals of Delhi University-affiliated colleges to send teacher nominees, the department in a notice issued on Monday said, “The proposed syllabus of BSc (Hons) Mathematics for Choice Based Credit System is available on the department’s website. There will be a meeting of mathematics teacher on May 21, 2015.”

“You are requested to nominate at least one teacher from Department of Mathematics of your college to attend the meeting,” the notice said.

Teacher and student groups in the varsity have come out in strong opposition against the University Grant Commission’s recent attempt at academic reforms, saying that the new system will compromise with autonomy of the institution.

According to the UGC, the new system proposes a common syllabus for all central
universities, a common entrance test, faculty and student mobility, and credit transfers.
DU last month asked all affiliated colleges to start preparation for the roll out of CBCS and had directed the department heads to finalise the syllabi, triggering a backlash from teacher groups.

The credit-based system is one of the big ticket announcements made by the HRD ministry this year.

Recently, the HRD Minister Smriti Irani informed the Parliament that as many as 18 central universities are on board to introduce the system at both the undergraduate and postgraduate level.
