Centre plans new road projects

Last Updated 23 May 2015, 20:14 IST

As part of its efforts to improve infrastructure, the government would lay global standard roads to connect 100 district headquarters in the country in the next three to five years.

Under the newly proposed Rashtriya Rajmarg Zila Sanjoyokta Pariyojana (RRZSP), the government would upgrade 6,600 kilometres of highways at an estimated cost of Rs 60,000 crore.

A highway ministry official said the Centre would upgrade roads identified by the state governments as high-density traffic. The onus of land acquisition lies with the states, he added. The official pointed to the recently announced Bharat Mala scheme to build 5,000 kilometres roads along the borders and coastal areas at a cost of Rs 50,000 crore as evidence that the Narendra Modi government is embarking on massive road building projects to modernise the country’s road infrastructure.
