“The HRD Ministry is the authority to bestow the deemed university status and also has authority to derecognise the deemed universities. But the Ministry should state the flaws of these institutions,” the officials said. More than 12,000 students belonging to the six deemed universities of Karnataka are affected by the Centre’s decision. As part of the reforms in higher education, the HRD ministry had indicated that the provision of granting deemed university status in the Section 3 of UGC Act will be abolished, implying that the deemed univarsity system will be abandoned.
