Five criminals who had shot dead a cash delivery boy during a failed robbery attempt late last month have been arrested.

Police said the gang was planning to rob the manager of a CNG pump in Rohini when they were nabbed on Sunday.

An interrogation of the accused revealed that the failed robbery attempt was planned by gang leader Yogesh whose wife deserted him due to their poor financial situation within six months of their marriage.

The suspects were apprehended in a park in Rohini where they had assembled with firearms, police said.

Two pistols and four cartridges were recovered from them. The robbery attempt cum murder had taken place on April 28.

“When Yogesh’s wife deserted him due to their miserable financial condition, he shared his grievances with his four friends. Together, they hatched a robbery plan,” said police.

They targeted one Sonu who collected daily earnings from certain dairies in west Delhi and carried the cash to Rajender Nagar at a fixed time every day.

Armed with two pistols, the gang had set out to execute their plan.
While one of them kept an eye on Sonu, the other three robbed him.

Things went as per plan for a brief while as they managed to stop Sonu at gunpoint.
But when they snatched his cash-laden bag, he put up a fight.

This forced Yogesh to open fire at him, said police.

Meanwhile, a crowd gathered at the spot, forcing the criminals to leave the bag and flee. Sonu later succumbed to his injuries.

A case was registered with Dwarka North police station and investigations taken up.
