‘Hadal’, a novel authored by senior journalist and poet C P Surendran was released here on Tuesday.

Inspired by a real-life incident, the novel tells the story of Miriam, a young and unmarried Maldivian who is trapped in an espionage charge levelled against her by a police officer, Honey Kumar.

Speaking during the launch held at Alliance Francaise, Surendran said: “It took me three and a half years to work on this novel. The book is an incisive critique of the rot at the heart of India, and corruption both physical and spiritual that permeates the structures of authority. It also deals with evolution.”

Theatre and media personality Prakash Belawadi who was present at the launch said the work is rich in terms of texture and the location the author chooses to visit. During an interaction with the audience, Surendran advised that one should not think too much while writing and must go with the flow.

The author said he is currently working on a collection of poems called ‘Repeat Radio’. C P Surendran’s poetry collections include ‘Gemini II,’ ‘Portraits of the Space We Occupy,’ ‘Canaries on the Moon’ and ‘Posthumous Poems.’
